Competitions of Skill or Chance?

December 12, 2010

Did you know that there are two basic categories for competitions in Australia: “games of skill” and “games of chance”.

The difference you ask?

A game of skill requires entrants to use their mental or physical strengths and abilities to win.

Skilled competitions that are currently popular in Australia are 25 word or less answers, providing captions, or answering a question.

In these competitions, judges decide who wins the prize based on the entrants' creativity, literary skills and entertainment value.  Chance has nothing to do with who wins.

But in competitions that are games of chance, the winner of the prize is drawn at random from all eligible entries.  This means everybody who enters has an equal and fair chance of winning.

What competition gives better winning odds?

When it comes to the odds, skilled-based competitions usually have fewer entrants than games of chance.  Why?  Because many people are deterred by the time it takes to enter them.

But while skill competitions may have better odds of winning, never forget the golden rule of comping:  Enter as many competitions as you can at least once.  This will always give you better odds than entering the one competition many times over.
